Touring Lanzarote

Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is one of the most popular holiday hot spots in Europe.  With lots of great beaches to explore along with some seriously surreal volcanic scenery that was created by huge eruptions some centuries ago.

The Canaries are made up of seven islands which are all ruled by Spain.  This group is located close to the coast of Africa and as a result has a semi tropical climate that makes it an ideal holiday destination.

The islands are just a four hour flight from countries in Northern Europe so as a result they welcome a lot of visitors from the UK, Eire and Germany.  All of whom touch down at Arrecife airport on flights to Lanzarote – which can be very cheap especially if booked from the UK.

The biggest visitor group is British tourists as holidays in Lanzarote have been very popular with consumers in that country ever since package tourism first took off in the 1970´s.  Today visitors from the UK account for around 50% of all arrivals on the island.  With Germany the second largest market.

Tourism is concentrated in three main holiday resorts – Playa Blanca, Puerto derl Carmen and Costa Teguise.  With rural tourism also on the rise – thanks to the fact that more and more visitors want to connect with the more authentic side of the island.  And they are now able to enjoy a stay in rural accommodation – with a large selection of Lanzarote villas now available for rent in the unique volcanic countryside.

Once on the island there is a huge amount of things to do and see. Sportsmen love Lanzarote as it is possible to train outdoors in great weather all year round.  As a result a lot of athletes and cyclists like to over winter on Lanzarote – often staying at the well know sports resort of La Santa in the north of the island.  Water sports such as diving and sailing are also very popular pastimes.

But its Lanzarote´s scenery that really takes the breath away – as this little island is partly covered in lava and over 300 volcanoes.  Thanks to the huge eruptions which rocked Lanzarote back in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Which at the time caused huge hardship for the locals and forced many of them to abandon their homeland in order to start new lives overseas, in destinations such as Cuba and across Latin America.

Lifes no beach for holiday donkeys

Hundreds of thousands of horses and donkeys are suffering overseas due to tourists, yet many British holidaymakers are unaware of their impact and how to act responsibly when they encounter working animals abroad. In popular destinations such as Egypt and Jordan, horses and donkeys are used to taxi tourists across difficult and dangerous terrain to historical landmarks. The animals are often over-worked, under-watered and under-fed, and have the added burden of frequently carrying passengers who are too heavy for them. Haggling is common as credit crunch tourists negotiate rock bottom prices and quibble over the last pound. Owners, whose livelihoods are dependent on these earnings, are often left short changed and are tempted to overwork the animals in their desperation to bring in enough money to feed their family. Video from Brooke, the equine charity.
